Gender and Feminist Studies in the Arab World

2.png

Feminist and Gender studies in the Arab world face many challenges and opportunities. These challenges center around the problem of integrating these studies into the field of political science and the absence of an institutional base, in addition to the adverse political and social climate that requires refuting misconceptions and dealing with the social and / or political influences related to these research and studies.

A report issued by the Asfari Institute for Civil Society and Citizenship at the American University of Beirut, in 2019, highlighted several models and experiences of teaching feminist and gender studies in the region. The report discussed the obstacles related to the lack of research and financial resources and the forms of self, political and societal censorship that these experiences face.

Hence, the Arab Political Science Network (APSN) in collaboration with the Asfari Institute organized a public webinar on the methodological and structural challenges of teaching Feminist and Gender studies in the Arab world.

Four professors and researchers in this field from Kuwait, Lebanon, Palestine and Morocco participated in the symposium to discuss current challenges and suggest alternative solutions aimed at establishing research and training structures that would help advance the level of research and teaching of these topics.
